What's New?

Stormwater Study

The City of West Plains has a Public Meeting on January 29th 2013 from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM at the Magnolia Room inside the Civic Center. At the meeting the City will be discussing the Stormwater study being conducted by Great Rivers. Citizens are encouraged to attend and bring any concerns or questions regarding any drainage issues they have had so the City can see what can be done to assist. A website has been set up for comments and there is an interactive map that can be used to point out specific water problems, the website can be found at wp.greatriv.com For more information feel free to call City Hall (417) 256-7170 or email stormwater@westplains.net

How it all Began

The Federal Clean Water Act of 1972 requires that stormwater discharges from certain types of facilities be authorized under stormwater discharge permits. The goal of the stormwater permits program is to reduce the amount of pollutants entering streams, lakes and rivers as a result of runoff from residential, commercial and industrial areas.

The original 1990 regulation (Phase I) covered municipal storm sewer systems for municipalities with populations equal to or greater than 100,000.

The regulation was expanded in 1999 to include municipalities with population of 10,000 or more. This expansion of the program is referred to as Phase II
